It's Halloween, the one time of year we celebrate being scared. So let's talk about the things that genuinely scare people about Pilates. Not ghosts or ghouls, but the worries that keep people from booking their very first class.
If any of these sound familiar, read on. We promise they're far less frightening than they seem.
1. "I'll be the worst one there"
This is the big one. Walking into a room and being the least fit, least flexible or least sure of what to do.
The truth: everyone in that room had a first class once. Every movement has easier and harder options, and nobody is watching you except your instructor, who's there to help.
2. "The Reformer looks complicated"
Springs, straps, a sliding carriage. It can look like a lot.
The truth: you'll get a calm introduction to the equipment, and your instructor will guide you through every set-up and movement. By the end of your first class, it'll feel much more familiar.
3. "I'm not flexible enough"
You don't need to be flexible to start Pilates. That's like saying you need to be fit before you go to the gym.
The truth: Pilates helps you build mobility over time. Every class meets you where you are, with no pressure to touch your toes.
4. "I won't know what to do"
Nobody expects you to. Your first class is about learning the movements and getting familiar with the Reformer, not performing.
The truth: clear cues, demonstrations and options throughout. You'll never be left guessing. If you'd like to know more before you come, read what to expect in your first class. [link: Post: What to expect in your first Reformer Pilates class]
5. "The last 10 seconds of a hold"
Okay, this one is genuinely scary. Even our regulars will tell you that.
The truth: it's also where you get stronger. And you can always take a break, or choose an easier option.
The scariest thing of all?
Thinking about starting for months and never actually booking. If you've been meaning to try Pilates, this is your sign.
Our classes run from 5:10am, with options for every level and a welcoming, judgement-free studio in Bundamba.
Happy Halloween from all of us at ALIGND.
