If you've been thinking about trying Reformer Pilates but something keeps holding you back, you're not alone. Most people feel a little nervous before their first class. Will I know what I'm doing? Will everyone else be fitter than me? What if I can't keep up?
Here's the honest answer: your first class is about learning, not performing. This guide walks you through exactly what happens, so you can walk in feeling calm and ready.
What is Reformer Pilates?
The Reformer is a Pilates machine with a sliding carriage, springs for resistance, a footbar and straps. The springs can make a movement easier or harder, which is why Reformer Pilates suits every level. The same exercise can support a complete beginner or challenge someone who's been coming for years.
At ALIGND, classes blend three elements: strength work that builds muscle, controlled movement that supports posture and joint health, and flowing sequences that connect it all with your breath.
Before your class
Book your spot on our timetable or in the ALIGND app. Any Reformer Pilates class is a great place to start.
Give yourself a few extra minutes to arrive. There's no rush: you can settle in, pop your grip socks on and let your instructor know it's your first class.
What to wear and bring
Comfortable clothes you can move in. Leggings or bike shorts and a fitted top work best, so nothing gets caught on the springs.
Grip socks. They keep you steady on the carriage. Don't have a pair? They're available to purchase in-studio.
A water bottle and a few extra minutes to settle in.
What happens during the class
Each class runs for 45 minutes. You'll start with a calm introduction to the equipment, and your instructor will guide you through every movement with clear cues.
Every exercise has options. If something feels like too much, there's an easier version. If you're ready for more, there's a way to progress. You choose what feels right for your body on the day.
Most importantly, there's no pressure to perform or keep up. Everyone in the room is focused on their own practice, and everyone had a first class once too.
How you'll feel afterwards
Most people leave feeling challenged, capable and clear on what to do next. You might notice muscles you didn't know you had the next day. That's normal, and it eases as your body adapts.
"As a first timer, it felt like a safe space to just be a beginner with no expectations of needing to be amazing the first go." Dekoda
