Reformer vs Mat Pilates, which is right for you?

One of the questions we hear most is: "Should I start with Reformer or Mat Pilates?" Both are grounded in the same principles of control, alignment and breath. But they feel quite different, and each has its own strengths.

Here's a simple breakdown to help you choose.

What is Mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates uses your own body weight, often with small props like balls or bands. Movements focus on your core, control and posture, and you're working against gravity rather than springs.

Because there's no machine to adjust, it can feel more challenging than people expect. Your deep core muscles do a lot of the work to keep you stable. At ALIGND, Mat Pilates classes run on The Mezz (upstairs).

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates uses a machine with a sliding carriage and springs. The springs add resistance to build strength, or support you through a movement when you need it.

That adjustability is what makes the Reformer so beginner-friendly. It also makes it a great full-body strength workout as you progress. At ALIGND you'll also find Jumpboard classes (Reformer with a jumpboard for low-impact cardio) and Mat & Reformer Fusion, which combines both.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Reformer if you want a full-body strength workout, like the idea of support while you learn, or want variety through Jumpboard and Fusion classes.

  • Choose Mat if you want to really connect with your core, prefer a slower focus on control, or want to build strength you can take anywhere.

  • Can't decide? You don't have to. Many of our clients mix both through the week. Mat work builds the deep control that makes your Reformer classes stronger, and the Reformer builds strength that makes mat work feel easier.
