October is Mental Health Month, and Saturday 10 October is World Mental Health Day. It's a good moment to pause and ask yourself a simple question: how are you, really?
If the honest answer is "tired", "stretched thin" or "I haven't thought about it", you're far from alone. Most of us spend our days looking after everyone and everything else, and our own wellbeing slides to the bottom of the list.
This post isn't medical advice, and Pilates isn't a treatment for mental health conditions. But there's a lot to be said for the small, steady habits that help us feel more like ourselves.
Movement and how you feel
You've probably noticed it yourself: after you move your body, things often feel a little lighter. Many people find regular exercise helps them feel calmer, sleep better and handle stress more easily.
You don't need intense workouts to feel the benefit. Gentle, consistent movement that you actually enjoy is far more sustainable than punishing sessions you dread.
Why Pilates can feel different
Pilates asks you to focus. To think about your breath, how you're moving and where you're holding tension. For 45 minutes, your attention is on your body instead of your to-do list.
For many people, that's the best part: an hour where nobody needs anything from them, where they can switch off from the outside world and simply move.
The power of breath
Breathing is one of the simplest tools you have. Slowing your breath down, especially lengthening your exhale, can help your body settle when you're feeling wound up.
Try it now: breathe in through your nose for a count of four, then breathe out slowly through your mouth for a count of six. Repeat a few times and notice how you feel.
Community matters too
Feeling connected is a big part of feeling well. Walking into a room where people know your name, smile when you arrive and cheer you on can make a real difference to your week.
That's exactly the kind of space we've worked to create at ALIGND: a place where you feel seen, supported and never judged.
Check in on yourself, and your people
This Mental Health Month, try one small thing:
Book an hour that's just for you, and keep it like any other appointment.
Send a message to a friend you haven't heard from in a while.
Invite someone to a class with you. Our Book a Buddy feature makes it easy.
Take five slow breaths before you get out of the car.
If you're doing it tough
If you're struggling, please reach out. Talk to your GP, someone you trust, or one of these free services:
Lifeline: 13 11 14 (24/7 crisis support)
Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636
In an emergency, call 000.
An hour that's just for you
If you've been meaning to make time for yourself, consider this your gentle nudge. Our classes start from 5:10am, with options for every level and no pressure to keep up.
Take care of yourself this month. You deserve it.
